(England Twitter)-Debris may have been swept away, but the afterglow and excitement of Kate Middleton and Prince William's royal nuptials continues to float in the air in the early hours of Saturday morning. As the crowds emerged from the Tube, they were met with a sunny breeze and the chimes from London's iconic Big Ben outside Westminster Abbey. With an estimated 140 tonnes of garbage having been collected, the immaculate streets were a stark contrast to yesterday's 1 million well-wishers who descended upon London to witness the momentous occasion.
5,000 officers should be "immensely proud" of their role in the "happy and safe" royal wedding event where the world watched Prince William and Kate marry.
An unprecedented covert and overt operation at the royal wedding saw 55 arrests as one million well-wishers flooded central London's streets.
After a light breakfast, the couple emerged from the garden entrance of the Queen's residence where they spent their wedding night on the ground floor Belgian Suite of the Palace. Strolling hand-in-hand, Kate looked happy and relaxed while wearing a cornflower blue chiffon dress by Issa. The floaty frock was paired with a dark cropped jacket, black waist belt, and shiny black wedges. They then headed towards a helicopter along with some luggage, although not for the honeymoon. That holiday has been postponed to a later date.
Trafalgar Square was another melting-pot of royal well-wishers. Alison Day, 49, from York, was in the Square for the marriage of Prince Charles and Lady Diana. “It was such a great day, I had to be here again,” she said.
This was not just a royal wedding. This was a true festival of Britain – one celebrating thousands of years of this country’s history and the monarchy. This was Britain and its people at its very best.
