Dundee is the fourth-largest city in Scotland and the 38th most populous settlement in the United Kingdom. It lies within the eastern central Lowlands on the north bank of the Firth of Tay, which feeds into the North Sea. Under the name of Dundee City, it forms one of the 32 council areas used for Local government in Scotland.
The town developed into a burgh in Medieval times, and expanded rapidly in the 19th century largely due to the jute industry. This, along with its other major industries gave Dundee its epithet as the city of "jam, jute and journalism".
In mid-2008, the population of the City of Dundee was estimated to be 152,320. Dundee's recorded population reached a peak of 182,204 at the time of the 1971 census, but has since declined due to emigration.
Gardyne's Land, located at 71 High Street, is a collection of five unique and interesting historical buildings. The Merchant's House (part of the complex) is the oldest, built by John Gardyne around 1560. The house is recognised as Dundee's oldest house. All of the houses have been restored and converted by WH Brown Construction into a backpackers hostel.
The Dundee Mountain Film Festival (DMFF), held in the last weekend of November, presents the best presenters and films of the year in mountaineering, mountain culture and adventure sport, along with an art and trade exhibition. DMFF is also one of the member of International Alliance for Mountain Film (IAMF) among other important international Mountain film festivals.
Dundee Airport (IATA: DND, ICAO: EGPN) is located 3 km (1.9 mi) from the centre of Dundee, Scotland or, for navigation purposes, 0.5 NM (0.93 km; 0.58 mi) south of the city. It lies on the shore of the Firth of Tay and overlooks the Tay Rail Bridge.
CityJet and Flybe are the only airlines operating regular scheduled passenger flights at the airport.
The airport lies on the main A85 Riverside Drive, which links the city centre to the Kingsway and the A90, with the airport barely a couple of kilometers from the city centre itself. Taxis are available from outside the airport.
Bus
Dundee Airport is served by National Express Dundee bus direct to the city centre, Broughty Ferry and Ninewells Hospital. Dundee Airport is a short taxi ride from the main Dundee bus station. Direct buses to many other major destinations are available from the station. Chartered buses can also be booked with local operators.
Rail
The airport is also a short taxi ride from the Dundee railway station. The station is situated on the East Coast line to Edinburgh and is also on the cross-country line serving Glasgow and further afield. Dundee Station is served by First ScotRail, East Coast and CrossCountry.
